Simply Great Music

by shawn.benson

I first heard Michael Halaas' "Mural" on my local NPR's "Echoes" hour. It was late, I was driving home, and I was instantly and completely absorbed by the intensely rich and complicated emotions carrying through the music. Personally, I've not connected to music like this in a long time.

After buying the album here on ITunes, I listened to all of the songs on repeat for a few hours. Usually, I can appreciate an artist and their work, put it down, and move on to something else that day. Not this time... To say the songs were "catchy" would be wrong (by it's natural pop-music connotation), but to say they're not memorable would be doing a far greater injustice to his work. It's almost as if Mr. Halaas was able to capture an emotional memory in each of these songs. Somehow very personal, these melodic remembrances are finely traced upon the lines of your own story. The sensation of finding something lost, but irreplacable is overwhelmingly wonderful.

In my opinion, these tracks are the equivalent of suddenly finding some old misplaced sentimental treasure you've packed away or thought lost. They carefully brush away the settled dust and let you rediscover something about yourself that is both incredibly warm and rewarding. Take the time to really listen and you won't be disappointed.

Really Cool album

I am normally not a whole album kind of dude, but I just bought the whole shaabang. I really like Passing Ships and Black Point, but all the songs rock.

incandescent, purposeful, amazing

This is the most dramatic and enchanting music I have ever encountered. Michael Halaas and Joan Jeanrenaud play their respective insturments with a great deal of mastery and yet, unlike some classical muscicians who sometimes sacrifice depth and personality for musical perfection, these two still manage to a great deal improvisation and authenticity. It makes the music a great deal more personal, in my opinion. They are musical geniuses and are very technical in their preformance, but they are also very sensitive to and aware of the emotions both inspiring and provoked by the music they write and play.
On a more intiment (perhaps dramatic) level, this music came to me at a time in my life where I thought nobody could understand the depth of sorrow I was experiencing. However, this music touched the places in my soul I thought only I had access to and gave me a language to express feelings that I thought I'd never be able to express. Its funny how music does that to you. This music can be listened to time and time again and with each listening the audience will discover a new part of the story and themselves.
