iTunes Review

Pittsburgh-based Anne Feeney is a stubbornly left-leaning folkie of the old school. Her brand of musical rabble-rousing reaches back through the heyday of Woody Guthrie all the way to the long-ago era of Joe Hill. She's is a true believer who minces no words as she denounces capitalist greed and extols the class struggle. Have You Been to Jail For Justice? (2000) may be Feeney's best release, featuring a spirited mix of originals, tunes by like-minded friends, and assorted old-time labor standards. Feeney’s militancy is tempered by her satiric wit, evidenced in “C.E.O.s” (a sardonic farewell to fallen fat cats) and “The Corporate Welfare Song” (she’s not in favor of it…). She also has a knack for writing anthems — the title track in particular is a stirring reminder of America’s tradition of resistance. Though basically working in an acoustic folk mode, Feeney stretches out into Staple Singers-like gospel on “Rebuild America – Keep Hope Alive!” and reggae on “For Gene Debs.” Have You Been to Jail For Justice? isn’t an appropriate gift for a Rush Limbaugh fan, but if you share Feeney’s world view these songs are rousing and revivifying stuff.

An Amazing Album

by Harry122

Anne Feeney's songs are amazing. She weaves her social conciousness through a framework of solid tunes, polished with the artistry of terrific arrangements and her wonderful sense of vocal expression - which can be as nuanced as a whisper or as hard-hitting as a sledgehammer.

Listen carefully to the title song. You're hearing a modern-day classic folk song, on par with anything Guthrie ever wrote.

But "Have You Been To Jail For Justice?" isn't only about the message, it's a celebration of life, of the struggle for freedom, and just plain good music.

Great music, great message

Folk music has almost always had some kind of political message, so I don't know where Sean M. gets off being surprised by that. On top of that, the Union Maid is a well known activist for liberal causes, so don't be surprised by it. She's an awesome musician, she's colloborated with Peter, Paul and Mary, give her a shot.

There is a reason I'm the first to write a review.

Anne is just another loon with a guitar. Anyone who has to intertwine a political theme with their music to sell it obviously haas no talent in music. You can buy this CD, or go out and drop a quarter in a homeless persons hat to hear equally mediocre guitar playing about how unfair the world is.
