The best of the best
by StardreamerThis album was an anomaly in the early days of filk -- instead of a live recording from a convention, a professionally-trained singer in a studio with orchestral arrangements. It remains one of the outstanding icons of the genre, and I was delighted to see it released on CD. Ecklar's vocal range spans an amazing 3 octaves, and she has a knack for reaching right into the heart of a story and pulling out a song that sums it up in a few short verses. Star Trek fans will recognize the opening line of "Fallen Angel" as Kirk's reaction to the destruction of the Enterprise in "The Wrath of Khan". But the real gem on this album is the last bonus track, "Roxanne," which cannot be found anywhere else. A haunting look at Cyrano de Bergerac and his courtly love for the maid Roxanne, it's the last line of this one that will rip your heart out.
Julia Ecklar has indicated that she is not going to be recording any more albums; she has another career now which occupies her full attention. This is the best album she ever put out, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
One of my all time favorites!
by Asis1I was so excited to find this album--I've been looking for it for years since the version I had on cassette tape from college got damaged. Haunting, imaginative, and powerful are words that come to mind when describing the songs (and Julia Ecklar's voice) on this collection. I'd love to find more background on the inspirations for individual songs; I can identify only 2 or 3 of the stories (e.g. Ladyhawke and Shadow of the Torturer).
Great FILK
