Album Review
If Frank Black fronted Mogwai, it might sound something not unlike McCarthy, and therein lies the problem — if those two acts were getting married, you'd have to speak up and stop the wedding. Favoring a lugubrious sound that spans the poles between fragile, hypnotic drone rock and crashing, oceanic noise, Helms does little new within the hard/soft dynamic already staked out by dozens of other bands of varying quality; frontman Sean McCarthy recites the lyrics in a droll, half-spoken voice evoking the Pixies, which is probably just a Massachusetts thing, but off-putting nevertheless. And yes, Helms and McCarthy are the surnames of the bandmembers, but they're also the surnames of two of the most evil archconservatives of the 20th century — talk about making a negative first impression. Cool cover design, though.

by riggyThis is a thoughtful and really great album. I'm sorry it took me so long to find it! The AMG review is ridiculous.
AMG: Heartless, cynical, or both?
by The CartographistHelms has been bringing the wonderment of childhood out in Boston indie rockers for years and years now. Who can resist the imagery of floating to shore on our rock instruments? Or a quality Van Halen reference?
If Sean McCarthy's lovingly tapped out melodies don't get you, his brother Dan's introspective drumming will. And Tina's basslines keep the whole thing grounded in a pop sensibility.
Honestly, the reviewer at AMG couldn't have it more wrong.
AMG couldn't be more wrong
by elliottxoHelms is one of the most innovative bands in current music. Apparently whoever was writing that review from AMG only gave McCarthy one listen and not one with much concentration at that. Astonishingly intricate and complex guitar work, Sean utilizes both hands to the fullest extent and then when he's run out of hands, he uses his face. Odd time signatures and frquent changes and a bassline that keeps everything together perfectly. AMG couldn't have been more wrong about this album. Maybe you should check out their glowing reveiw for Helms' other album, The Swimmer, to get a better idea of what this album holds.
