Album Review

New age need not mean Yanni. On Steve La Cerra's second solo instrumental LP, one doesn't think of late-night TV Quiet Moods CDs, either. When it works best is when it is at its simplest: a lush little keyboard passage, some flamenco Spanish guitar, and maybe a woodwind or two. And there should be more of the somber piano that keeps Flight from becoming mere background music for lite FM stations. At times the music turns too grandiose progressive rock for this writer's taste (the synth solos veer too much toward bad Supertramp mixed with Zamfir's pan flute), but some of the more textural stuff, when the synths sound more like music for ice castles, would sound nice in a movie.
