A truly satisfying album of experimental electronica!
by GirlPowerNaziI first became aware of m/n/m/l through a Serge Modular compilation also available on iTunes. I was interested in hearing examples of this synth, and it was sonically interesting, but of the tracks, m/n/m/l's "Sun Shine" (also included here) was the most pleasing and the only one I found to suit my tastes enough for repeated play.
By the time "repeated" turned into "often repeated," I decided I should seek out other work by the artist. This is the first one that I bought, and it will not be the last. The tracks here tend to be more experimental than "Sun Shine", but they are no less satisfying. They lean towards a sparse but always musical ambience, with even the several-minute panning drone that slowly builds and fades through out the track "Gray" proving to be a very intriguing listen.
What separates m/n/m/l from the pack of home-studio experimental musicians is the level of thoughtful musicianship. It seems that Serge users often become caught up in noise for the sake of noise, which in my opinion is really something of a trap. M/n/m/l manages to use his instrument to craft unique soundscapes with a delicate touch. I found these tracks to be immensely satisfying.
Hint to the listener: The active use of panning effects makes this album great for headphone listening.
