A Vanishing Breed

     

Vocals are easily as good as and reminiscent of Suzanne Vega or Shawn Colvin. I had the chance to pretend to be a sound guy at one of her shows in a small New England town and she was enchanting. At one point she was singing a tune she wrote that had one of the unforgivable couplets--rain/pain, tomorrow/sorrow, something along those lines--that bad lyricists use or even good ones when they just give up trying to say something. She sang the first line, most of the second and motioned to the audience to complete the rhyme. We dutifully responded and then she basically apologized and promised never to do it again. A little bit of imp in this one and there was genuine affection in the air that night. This CD doesn't really capture this side of her, probably the studio stuff won't, and unfortunately she's gone now. But she was special and one of a vanishing breed of singer/songwriters.
