Album Review

Presented here is Scream Sophie, a foursome native to Alabama big on heavy, distortion-laden progressive rock, charged with heavy guitar licks and gnarly vocals. An album filled with promise, much of the material is electric and powerful at the least, with gripping guitar chops by Curt Granger, steamy vocals by Tim Ward, and the percussive fury of Jeremy Paul and Brian Garrett. The tunes can best be described as dark, morose, and haunting, leaving the listener awed with a hurricane-like presence. Like walking through a firecracker haze of sound, stirring abuzz with energy and excitement, this is what Scream Sophie can bring to an audience, with tight grooves, passionate vocals, and heavy percussion. Just think of the Terminator during his mission to save the world, or Superman flying high in the sky to stop any evildoers that cross. With songs such as "Drag Me Down" and "Tell You Again," nothing will stand in the way of success and fulfillment for this band, as long as they continue to reach a favorable Southeastern U.S. audience and enjoy themselves along the way. Perhaps their future will reveal the fate of this group most likely, such as whether or not they choose to compose more murky, heavy songs, or change directions somewhat. As "Tell You Again" states, "life is short, life is long, you're life's been ended since you did me wrong"; let's hope this group remains strong and stable, in order to reach their dream of reaching a wider audience. To finish, this is a shining example of much of the music that has been lost around the local, to pop, ska, and punk, music reminiscent of early-'90s Stone Temple Pilots that's sure to catch wave again. ~ Shawn M.
