Deeper and more sincere than pop
by Marina M.
Scott is one of those multi-talented indie musicians whose music almost slips past you the first listen. But it catches at you; his unique voice continues to sing inside long after, and over repeated listenings the songs grow roots and take on lives of their own inside your heart.
The genre assigned to this album ("pop") really doesn't suit it, as the songs are deeper and more sincere than pop songs. There are hints of folk, hints of the better kinds of rock, hints of the better kind of country, and lots of acoustic. The only reason I give four and not five stars is because I am very chintzy with my five-star awards. Someday I may have to eat my words here. :-)
I love all the songs on this album. My top favorites are "2 A.M.," which captures that sad and lonely feeling one has in the middle of the night when one can't sleep because of one's thoughts, and the somewhat mysterious and haunting "Everything They Say," about a woman who is retreating into her own world. At least, I think that's what it is about. Buy it, listen to it, and see what you think.
"Gravel Road Requiem" and "Cast the Net Wide" are also favorites. "The Big Lie..." is an in-your-face confrontation song that says j'accuse in a jaunty, upbeat way. Buy the album and check them all out yourself!
