Album Review

Saxophonists must possess utmost confidence and daring to produce albums in which they are the sole performers; for one thing, there's no rhythm section to help keep the tempo and beat. But Robert Kyle has the experience and audacity of a street musician, keenly understanding that attracting people who might throw money into the tenor sax case has an immediate effect on getting enough to eat that night (or getting anything to eat it all). This is Kyle's second album for his Dark Delishious Music label and his playing well fits the label's name. All the cuts are standards, and Kyle treats each as if it's being played for the first time anywhere and by anybody. His dark tenor tones reflect the tradition set by Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young; they are both heard in his playing as one might expect. Like one of his contemporaries, Scott Hamilton, Kyle has not been affected by bop or Coltrane. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kyle has played with a variety of artists, including many blues musicians. He has been with Linda Hopkins for ten years and is her musical director. Kyle has also backed Lou Rawls, Della Reese, and Brenda Russell, but none of that experience comes through on this session. This is melodic sax at its most straightforward, uncomplicated, and romantic. There is no up-tempo playing, dazzling runs (except for "I Cover the Waterfront"), or convoluted chords — just the lushness of a full-bodied solo sax. Since there is a "#1" appended to the title, one assumes there will be a "#2" at the minimum. It's an event worth waiting for if this album is any indication. Recommended.
