by Tani13This album is inspiring. The first time I heard it I just kept playing it over and over. I still feel like I can't get enough of it. Can't wait for the next album. If you think it sounds great on your ipod try listening to it on really great car speakers, then by all means rock out while on the road.
A musical for people who don't like musicals
by Maestro 525,600After doing some research on this album, I came to find out that this is part of the score from an Off-Broadway musical. Very interesting stuff and not what you would expect from a musical theater piece - an intriguing fusion of alternative rock, pop, folk, funk, and even hip-hop! Produced by Brian McTear of Bitter Bitter Weeks fame, this album sounds like something you'd hear on modern day radio. The music is hip and catchy, the lyrics masterfully crafted. And here I thought that musicals were supposed to sound hokey and archaic.
Interestingly, the creators took a similar route as Andrew Lloyd Webber did with JCS, releasing the Concept Recording prior to a staged production. And although there is a definite respect for the lineage of musicals by Jonathan Larson (Rent) and Stephen Schwartz (Godspell/Pippin), Beautiful has more of an updated, contemporary feel. The writers definitely have their finger on the pulse of the sound of today's musicals (Hedwig, Spring Awakening & Passing Strange to name a few).
Favorite tracks include "Beautiful" (gorgeous Radiohead-esque ballad), "Suba" (fun, uptempo tune), "Choice" (Kori Withers, daughter of Bill, delivers a lovely performance), "Erase Me" (hard-hitting grunge tune), "One More Time" (ever heard someone rap in 7/8?) and "Emily" (cool, creepy ballad). The more I listen to this album, the more I find there is to discover, and the more I like it. Not sure if the book is all there, but with a dramaturgical facelift, someone should produce this work.
All in all, a fresh, edgy musical that should satisfy the "High School Musical" crowd once they outgrow "Spring Awakening."
