Album Review

Now reduced to a three-piece (John Murphy, Jeff Murphy, and Gary Klebe), the band recorded their fifth album independently in their home studio in Illinois. A pleasant though unexceptional album, Silhouette is a softer, more keyboard-dominated effort. Without an American outlet (they left Elektra prior to recording), this album was only available in Europe until the band's own label, Black Vinyl Records, reissued it in the late '80s.

Pleasant But Unexceptional?? No Way!!

The Shoes oeuvre is vast and spotty. While the songwriting, hooks and harmonies are always exceptional and creative, the production value makes the listening experience rough at times because as an underground pop phenom, it took Shoes a while to get a good recording contract. This album is well into their career and does, as itunes suggests, present a more keyboard driven approach, but the quality of the songwriting is awesome. "Will You Spin For Me," "Pieces of Glass" and "I Wanna Give It To You" are personal favs and I'd be hard-pressed to say any of the others included here are duds. Exemplary power pop that you'll have a very difficult time getting out of your head once it takes ahold of you. If you're unfamiliar with Shoes, this is as good a place as any to start, as half of these songs are on the Shoes Best collection anyway. Highly reccommended.
