Album Review
The second song on the White Iron Band's debut album is called "Sesame Street Blues," and it is indeed a country blues based on the familiar melody from the kid's TV show. Its lyrics name-check Jerry Jeff Walker, and that's a good touchstone: although the White Iron Band are from Minneapolis, their heart is in Lukenbach, TX, spiritual home of the '70s outlaw country movement. A live, loose feel pervades the album, complete with bum notes, shouts, and a raw, undermixed sound that puts Sammy Weyandt's lead guitar well out in front of most of the other instruments. In that context, even the somewhat inconsistent songwriting doesn't undermine the good-timey bar-band feel of the record. From the statement of purpose "Highs, Lows" to the anthem of regional solidarity "Minnesota Pride," White Iron Band is unpretentious, rough-edged country-rock that's never less than fun.
