Very unique...

by jefffrompgh

And yes I know that there is no such thing as very unique; you either is or you ain't. But it works for the interesting blend that Laura and her band have to offer...

I found Laura at an outdoor festival in Pennsylvania, and even though at times I felt like her only fan in the crowd, I kept on clapping. For the slow/jazz/r&b flavored stuff that the audience did like, for the hardpop/rock stuff that they didn't, as well as the hard-to-classify stuff in between. The band was tight, Laura's voice captivating, and I left with this CD. It's still in my car, and will be for a while...

unique and bursting with flavor

its hard to catagorize Laura Wolfe's music. Its filed under r and b but r and b doesn't really get it.
Her songs are very inspired and inspiring. Anthem-like and beautiful. A breath of fresh air.

R&B stands for...?

To start with the thing most important to note, economically: I am wowed that this is classified as an R&B album. I came to this artist's album because itunes noted her as a "follower" on india.arie's page. With the exception of Naked (track 4), there is very little that is overtly R&B about this album. If you're looking for pop-based neo-soul (as Arie's music is), then save your money and leave this one alone.

However, if Indie music or folksy pop is in your cue of musical interests, then this is at least worthy of a cursory listen. (Use the 30 second previews, though.) Some sounds are a little avant-garde, but musically interesting, and at some points seem reminiscent of Tori Amos. Perhaps Laura might be better placed as a follower on Amos' page or even Joni Mitchell's.

I would give it a poor rating based on its classification (if Laura Wolfe/her record label really think this Rhythm and Blues), but give it an average one (if rated without that consideration). It's not terrible. But, it's not terribly good, either.
