Intelligent, listenable EP from local Chi-town band
by sxy6fngrs
This is a really good example of a band making an EP without pretentiousness or the lame attempt at trying to crack it big with "get rich quick" type music. The songwriting here shines, and inchWORM's use of classic sounds and vintage gear makes the listener believe he/she is in another place or time. Not to say that the music doesn't sound fresh, on the contrary, it sounds exactly like what you want music to be like in today's world. The shining moments on this album are difficult to pin down to just a few. The title track "Porchlight" is a shimmering example of simple slide guitar and piano melodies combining together to form a powerful Beatles-esque psychedelic sound collage. "Lost Days" has an infectious groove that is impossible to get out of your head after first listen. The most remarkable section of the Porchlight EP may lie in the album's final two songs. The dreamy "The Bones Down Your Back" floats through time and space while climaxing into a cacophany of dissonant pianos, layered delayed guitars, and a weird indian drone. As these moments of brilliance develop and begin to fade into the crackling hiss of an old record player, the underwater sonar pulse of the album's final cut, "You Know I Need You", begins and this stark plea for love unfolds into inchWORM's closing sonic journey for this masterpiece EP.
Definitely recommend this record to anyone with a love of musical atmosphere and a palette suited for vintage sound.
