Think early Jane Siberry or Kate Bush
by Alonso NightjarI don't know what Rachel's musical influences were growing up but I was reminded of a several very good songs by fellow Canadian Jane Siberry as I listened to this album the first time -- and I liked the comparison because Rachel is very much her own person. These are intelligent songs that require active listening for the poetry/stories in the lyrics and the emotion in her music. I really like The Clearing, Between Us, Mason-Dixon Line (strong Siberry-esque songs.) Actually most of the songs are very good.
Not everyone's cup of tea apparently, but I found myself continually searching for her next CD when she went away to college. Yes, I've liked this album for that long. And yes, it is an album, not something to simply to pick a song or two to add to a mix. It isn't background music but very intentional like you'd expect from a good songwriter.
Stunning, original, emotional pop
by Peony 12I stumbled across this record one day (I can't remember how), and have to say I was wowed. Why don't we hear more music like this on the radio? It's ambitious! Some of the influences are easy to pick out—Bjork, especially—but you can tell right away you're dealing with an authentic voice. This record comes from a deep place. I especially love the way she combines hi- and lo-fi so effortlessly: moving from simple folk arrangements ("The Bird's Lullaby") to really arty, synth-driven pop ("The Waves"). Also, I'm generally more a fan of music than lyrics, but a lot of her lines stand on their own as poetry. Standout tracks: "Juanita," "The Clearing," "Procedure," "Mason Dixon Line." If you like pop that doesn't require you to check your artistic integrity at the door, get this record.
Haha
