by lockwoodlanesJ. L. Stiles is truly a rare find. A solo acoustic player with real power in his voice and his songwriting. He plays a brand of music reserved for the greats, even handling a Mississippi John Hurt classic, "Trouble," with an incredibly delicate and faithful evolution of a staggeringly beautiful song. Even more amazing is that this towering standard feels so at home with Stiles' own compositions. Beyond the full and accurate vocals and capable hands that tackle some very difficult stylings, it is the meaning and melodic appeal in these songs that will stand the test of time. Every track is solid, from the irreverent reality of "Nothing Here for Me" to the touching reflection of "Renewal Song" to the yearning message of "Make Your Own Day" to the hypnotic hook of Sweet Olive Tree to the bluesy regret of "You Missed it Man," J. L. Stiles is the kind of artist that makes you realize how mediocre most art really is.
Love This CD
by AlexOldhammerI first saw JL play at Sonoma State a couple of years ago and I was blown away. This CD has beautiful mellow songs with a great voice. It's all very heartfelt. My favorites are "Slow Rider" and "Make Your Own Day" but the whole CD is great.
