Are they making a Magnolia 2?
by CHUANG!If I ever have the opportunity to direct a movie, I'm going to make sure it includes ninjas, robots, robot ninjas and Richie Sambora--just because Sambora rules, and I hate the smug look Bon Jovi gives Sambora everytime they're on stage, as if to say "I had a reoccurring role on Allie McBeal, what'd you do aside from marrying the girl off Melrose Place?"
If I had the luxury of making an indie short film, I'd still have ninjas, but instead of the king of the double-neck, I'd have Akiva.
Do you remember years back when that Tom Cruise movie, Magnolia, came out? Well, part of the fuss surrounding the movie was that one artist, Aimee Mann, was contributing all of the music to the film. When the director was asked why only one artist, the reply was that Mann could carry an entire film, and the director had always wanted to direct a movie AROUND her. AROUND HER.
So when I say I wish I could make a movie, its not because I have that desire, its because The Hermosa EP makes me have it. While many artists and albums can boast of "telling stories," The Hermosa EP makes you want to tell your own story. When I hear "The First Place," it makes me think of a specific time and place in my life, and suddenly I wish I had a fisheye lens around my neck so that I could show people what I was feeling. Its kind of like how you wish someone would film you in slow motion because you know it'd look cool; the music off of Akiva's sophmore effort doesn't just bring you back to where you want to go, it brings you back to a place where the hurt is poetic and the fun is blindingly bright. It makes you remember people, places and things like they were in a movie, and we all know that movies are where the magic happens. It just so happens that my magic involves ninjas.
