Classical-Jazz at its best!

by Nucleo UnderGroove

Josh’s tone and lines are remarkably beautiful. His bass rhythms drive the winding piano lines of Ovsepian, and Toriyama’s percussion is seamless with the drum set. All the pieces are masterfully arranged.

Who can argue with an album that contains tunes by Sting and Brahms in equal measure? This group of gifted musicians takes some the greatest music of the past two centuries, and respectfully and truly makes it their own. Time is rock solid, with musicians playing inside and outside freely. The interplay between them is a beautiful thing to hear, and the solos are absolutely fresh, cohesive, and the product of musicians that need to be heard more. Joshua Davis' bass playing has a Charlie Haden-like resonance and profundity, and pianist Ovsepian has a knack for picking notes like Miles Davis -- always the right ones. The whole ensemble's attention to tone color is amplified by drummer Toriyama's nearly melodic interjections and tasteful support. The precision between guitarist and pianist is extraordinary, as is the blend between them. This is 21st century chamber music that defies genre and is performed at the highest level.
