Best Baltimore Export since "THE WIRE" Season 4...
by Dave Feldman
Made up of former members of the venerable Baltimore band Great Mutant Skywheel among others, the Big Hurt have a sound that might be better suited for the sunny, laid-back beachlife of San Diego rather than the mean streets of Balmer. This doesn't mean they don't rock. Roots-tinged rock with reggae and ska overtones, lead singer Billy can wail either high or low and does so over some choice guitar licks, some serious percussion from the rhythm section of JTK3 and 808, and layer upon layer of beats from their resident DJ Mr. Frank himself.
Best cuts are the jubilant, gangsta-leanin' "Low Rider", the sassy yet funktified "Low Down Ho" (for all you ladies out there) and my personal favorite "Nina" which sounds like classic 91X, perfect for skidding down Mission Boulevard or Prospect Street on your way to Del Mar in a drop-top. Definitely check them out here ("Nina" should be your first pick-up, if not the whole album) and try to catch them live when they play, as they occasionaly get this crazy cat who sits in a chair on stage with them to dance. It's wild. Trust me...
