When Point Juncture, WA’s sound was described as “ethereal dreampop”, it couldn’t have been more accurate. Everything about this album is centered on tones set to create a delicate scene, swelling into intense emotive moments. It builds in dynamics, opening with a drum loop panned to the left and light percussion, over an organ, cello, and vibraphone, and someone speaking in the right ear… sounding as though the voice is being lost in atmospheric frequencies. Guitars gently come in, drenched in effects, while it all builds with trumpets carrying it into the next track. And that’s just the opening track.

Mamma Auto Boss is done tastefully and thoughtfully. Each element has its’ own place and fits beautifully together. The lyrics are equally as thoughtful, such as: If I were a light I’d be lit up / Till something brighter comes along / I’ll be your happy ending, yeah / I’ll be your happy ending. The vocals are led by Amanda, on drums, and Jesse, on guitar. Guitarist for the band, Skyler Norwood, did a wonderful job producing the album. They are shared intuitively, never leaving you with a feeling of competition. The vocal tones are always under control, conveying emotion, yet calm at the same time.

When vinyl LPs gave way to tapes, and then to CDs, the standard that vinyl art has never been replicated. Now with the digital age threatening CDs, album art is being lost completely. Yet the packaging on Mamma Auto Boss is one to treasure. Opening this album made the artist in me smile. The case is cleverly folded, placed inside a white sleeve envelope, with a Japanese-influenced sun printed on both the envelope and the case. Each album is numbered (the band recently announced they were reprinting this album).

Everything about Point Juncture, Washington is well thought out and creative. Nothing about this band is thrown together. From the packaging to the deliverance of the songs, Mamma Auto Boss is brilliant.
