Album Review
This release of 13 upbeat and perky pop tunes meanders along as though the grunge days of the 1990s never happened. From the simplicity of Beach Boys' harmonies on "What Can I Do" and "Ghost Town Sunday" to the easy XTC-like choruses of "Days and Days" and "I'm Sorry," the Nines combine catchy pop grooves with intentional touches of aggressive, chugging rock guitar. Lead singer Steve Eggers vocalizes with gentle sincerity over the Brit-pop riffs of Sam Tallo and Andrew Webb. An intriguing cut is "When the Day Is Through." For one thing, it's relatively short (clocking in at less than two minutes), and for another, it sounds eerily like a Pink Floyd tune. Other tracks, such as the fuzzy-amp textured "Jules Maxi," play into a psychedelic Beatles fantasy. But for the most part, the rhythms on Wonderworld of Colourful are subtle and sunny, mid-tempo, and joyfully executed.

The highest compliment I can pay: They're XTC!
by Boiled PeanutThey're not a slavish imitation of XTC, but they have all the quirky charm and melodic sensibility of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, and the singer even sounds like Andy. Add in a couple of dashes of Teenage Fanclub and Sloan, and you've got the Nines: An inspired, smart, thoughtful power pop band with no interest whatsoever in getting played on the radio.
One of the greats
by okiehawkThe Nines are among the greatest of all pop bands, ever. I know that sounds like an exaggeration and gushy, but I still think it's true. The songcraft is amazing, with hooks, harmonies, and great musicianship everywhere. Also, as is often the case, this first release is their best, although the others are all worthwhile. From the pure pop genius of "What Can I Do" and "Morning I Wake" to the haunting "Jennifer Smiles" every track is a pop gem. The outlying track "Jules Maxi" isn't my thing, but who cares? The rest of it pops and rocks. Go Steve Eggers!
