Album Review

A journey through life as portrayed by a series of jazz standards. It's not a new album concept, but it often works quite well. Here, Chicago-c*m-Vegas performer L. Zaide croons his way through ten of the greatest standards around. The backing band is entirely capable, but stays in an accompanying capacity for the most part. Zaide's vocals take a stab at being the star of the show. The style is mildly akin to some of Chet Baker's work, but Zaide's voice seems thin in comparison. The emotion is there, but the power is lacking. The group, as well as Zaide, is highly technically proficient nonetheless. The album is worth picking up solely for the song selection, but the album does stand out for having some of the nicer renditions of the pieces.

l.zaide delivers the atmospheric goods on 'planet chill'...the backing band (top-notch, by the way) does a great job of accompanying without getting in the way, giving him room to explore his inner chet and jobim. i've had the privilege of seeing l.zaide out and about on the chicago jazz scene; while many singers ape the upper-register effects of the baker/jobim school of jazz vocals, he's one of the few who channels the mindset and feeling they had. i'm glad to see and hear someone breaking the elling/buble (gasp)/mahogany mold for male jazz singers.

take a chance on this album...i think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you find.
