Album Review

The Who's second album is a less impressive outing than their debut, primarily because, at the urging of their managers, all four members penned original material (though Pete Townshend wrote more than anyone else). The pure adrenaline of My Generation also subsided somewhat as the band began to grapple with more complex melodic and lyrical themes, especially on the erratic mini-opera "A Quick One While He's Away." Still, there's some great madness on Keith Moon's instrumental "Cobwebs and Strange," and Townshend delivered some solid mod pop with "Run Run Run" and "So Sad About Us." John Entwistle was also revealed to be a writer of considerable talent (and a morbid bent) on "Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider." [A special 200-gram vinyl edition of the album was released in 2005.]

Great album, but...

Where's Happy Jack? Apparently when they remastered the album, they dropped one of the title songs.

Very good who album for the 60's. In my mind this album has 5 great/amazing songs, 3 good songs and 2 OK/bad songs not counting the bonus tracks. 10 = amazing 9 = great 8-7 = good 6 = OK 5-0 = Bad

Run Run Run - 9 great song with a good guitar and vocals part.
Boris the Spider - 10 VERY GOOD. One of the best entwistle compostition. BEST SONG
I Need You - 8 Pretty good. I expected worse from a moon composition
Whiskey Man - 9 Another great entwistle composition. great lyrics and drumming.
Heatwave - 7.5 Good but it's a little short
Cobwebs and Strange - 6.3 OK but not too good. The crazy drumming can get annoying and the changing tempo
Don't Look Away - 8 Good song with a catchy tune.
See My Way - 5 Really bad. Music gets annoying becuase there are no meledies in the song.
So Sad About Us - 10 Good tune, guitar and vocals. Over all 3rd best song.
A Quick One, While He's Away 10 - 2nd Best Song on the track. Really 6 short songs put together.

Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete...
