Album Review

Andy Partridge's discovery of the 12-string guitar set the tone for English Settlement, an album that moved away from the pop gloss of Black Sea in favor of lighter, though still rhythmically heavy, acoustic numbers with more complex and intricate instrumentation. There are plenty of pop gems — "Senses Working Overtime" stands as one of their finest songs — but the main focus seems to be the more expansive sound; most of the songs are drawn out to near-epic length, ultimately taking some of the impact of the songs away. Despite several terrific tracks, English Settlement seems more a transitional album than anything else, although the textural sound of the album is quite remarkable, indicating the direction they would take in their post-touring incarnation.

English Settlement

by Skippy tastes better than Jiff

I must admit I am bit surprised at the dismal assessment of English Settlement by the on-board reviewer. This is far and away my favorite XTC production. It is the most consistently interesting lyrically and musically. In fact following this work, I felt that XTC started to lose their way. Their music became more palatable for the likes of MTV--sugar-coated and fairly boring. With that said, you can't go wrong with English Settlement (IMHO), but make sure you listen to it from end-to-end at least five times; then you will start to discover what makes this a tremendous XTC work, and you'll likely listen to it another 500 times.

A GREAT Album ..one of the best ever?

I don't love XTC but I do love this album! I had the good fortune to hear it when I had time to listen, and it does take time. Every song is full of a complexity that informs the next, but that statement doesn't do justice to the light touch and fun melodies that infuse this record. Get some headphones and some time and enjoy this one. It's definitely one of the top ten of the 1980s, isn't it? English Roundabout encapsulates the verve and brilliance of it.

One of the best of the 80s

XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden...
