iTunes Review

It's often suggested that Sea Change is Beck's "breakup record." It is certainly his least joyous, his least experimental, and his most mono-tonal. It's a heart-wrenching listen that takes up permanent residence in the acoustic sadcore wing of Heartbreak Hotel. From the opening chords and lonely strokes of slide guitar that begin "The Golden Age" through the final somber notes of "Side of the Road," there's no moment where an errant hip-hop beat or distorted guitar solo flips past in ironic glee. This direct approach has an unsettling, often beautifully austere result. "Guess I'm Doing Fine" sounds like the life-affirming greeting of a dead man. "Already Dead" sounds like a walk through the gardens of a mental institution with a patient who's been heavily sedated while recounting the sorry events that led him there. Much like broken-hearted troubadours - Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters or Hayden, spring to mind - Beck looks to connect without artifice.

A Great Songwriter

Beck has always been a great songwriter, but sometimes the production overshadows the quality . . . here the songs BREATHE and take center stage. Good work, Beck!

wow ok this brings back so much nostalgia for me. On a ski trip, on my bed, middle of night, very depressing. Ski trip was wonderful but the people i was with. anyways, wow. Like this music is so comfortable. I also have "the information" and "modern guilt" and this IS THE BEST ALBUM seriously like. Beck is so happy on this album although a few times seems depressing. anyways like for example this is the first beck cd i ever had because I was recomended to it ha. And that was a while ago. But i can tell you that this is better than the two i have. so GET IT man good shizznit

It is said that every great artist puts out only one record unlike any of their other's. Beck puts out a record unlike any of his others every album, but this one in particular is a TRUE work of art and something only experienced right if you've been there yourself; and like someone else said he will never do this again....

One of the most inventive and eclectic figures to emerge from the '90s alternative revolution, Beck was the epitome of postmodern chic in an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences — pop, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop, country, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise...
