Adam Young needs to learn from these guys
by Unmedicated EddieSuicide are the greatest non-rock n' roll rock n' roll band of all time. It's just two guys--a singer and a keyboardist--but the music absolutely embodies what the punk/new wave revolution was trying to bring back. Nothing pretentious here. It's not even cold and soulless like so much electronica. This music oozes raw heat and testosterone. And while none of the songs on this album are exactly pop gems, this is possibly the most fascinating product punk ever produced.
Timeless Classic, A Masterpiece!
by Patron Saint of Nothing MuchThis album only sold about 4000 copies when it was originally released in 1977. Suicide has gone on to influence, inspire, and gain the admiration of countless artists that hail from very diverse genres. Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, Soft Cell, Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spiritualized, J.G. Thirlwell(Foetus), Sisters of Mercy, Barry Adamson, and the list goes on.
The beautiful simplicity of the songs like "Cheree", "Girl", "Keep Your Dreams", and Che are true testament of the genius of Suicide. Songs like "Frankie Teardrop" and "Harlem(live)" give a better feel for the raw emotion of Suicide whether it was captured on tape or experienced live.
The no guitars or drum kit approach was very hard concept for most music fans to grasp and it caused many people to riot and become violent. "23 Minutes Over Brussels" is a recording of a concert that turned into a riot. The audience finally took the microphone from Alan Vega and Suicide had to make a hasty exit before the mob starting trashing the place. The Cars had Suicide open for them at the Hollywood Bowl and when the Cars took the stage after Suicide's set the drummer found a knife that had been thrown from the audience on the drum kit.
Suicide's early gigs(1972) were at the Mercer Arts Center in Soho where the New York Dolls were also cutting their teeth and coming up with their own sound. Alan Vega was known for walking around with a chain at gigs and confronting the audience members even if they tried to just get up and go to the restroom. Their live shows were not the user friendly punk/pop experience that could be expected from many of their CBGB peers. Suicide was confrontational pre-Punk, pre-Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Blondie and the rest of the NYC music explosion that would mostly go onto loftier heights.
This recording is a testament to thinking outside of the box and doing what you want when everyone else is doing the complete opposite.
woweeee
by theycallheralaskamy listening experience: falling on the ground laughing while getting severe chills. and then my chest started to really hurt and i thought i might have a heart attack. never had that combination occur before.
anywho, this is an absolutley unique and important album and quite the listening experience. i don't know if i wasn't in the right mood, or they meant to be intentionally funny, but "girl" is probably one of the funniest things i have ever heard. however, if you are very physically affected by music like i am i would approach with caution because when frankie teardrop comes on i become very (irrationally) scared that before the song is over my heart might not be able to take the strain. cheers to them for being able to produce such a horrifying, dark, and entertaining album.
