Album Review
Here are the names of bands that flitted through the mind of a music critic while listening to the Capes' debut album, Hello: the Buzzcocks, Wire, Oasis, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Squeeze, the Beatles (again), the Jam, the Kinks (again), the Beach Boys (again). That is august company, of course, and it is also indicative of the Capes' music, which is catchy, guitar-based pop/rock that edges toward punk/new wave rock, but also boasts enough keyboard blips to show greater musical sophistication, along with occasional harmonies to sweeten things and often clever lyrics declaimed in clear British accents. In the mid-'60s, many of these tracks could have been hit singles; in the late '70s, they could have set clubs pogo-ing. In the 2000s, they can admittedly sound somewhat retro at times, but the Capes manage to reinvent their influences for their own purposes and play with enough conviction to make this infectious music their own. And they throw enough odd ingredients into the mix (the Japanese "chat" in "Shinjuku Hi-5," the eerie synth riffs in "Francophile [Ver 1.5]") to give the songs individual character. The Capes are not just pale imitators of previous generations of British rock bands, even if they bring many of those bands to mind. They accomplish the feat of taking an utterly familiar style and coming up with something new.

This version of "Hello" is being sold illegaly by iTunes
by Spring TigerThe Label that is selling it here through iTunes is doing so illegaly and does not hold the rights to any work by The Capes. The band does not receive a cent from any sales of this, even though theye own the complete rights.
A new official version including bonus & live tracks will be posted in the next week. If you wish to support The Capes then please buy the newer version instead! It'll even include a decent cover rather than a badly scanned one like this bootleg. Thanks!
Hello: A 4.5 at least
by wobcDJ22Let me start by saying that I really enjoy this album. It is ubeat and a general pleasure to listen to. Since everyone always asks for a comparison with other artists, I will give you a list. The Capes, in my opinion, sound like a fusion of quite a few bands I like but if I were to really narrow it down, I would say that the Capes sound like the love child of Maximo Park and the Stills (if you listen to the songs "Carly" and "Comet Tails" you will understand exactly what I mean). I think in general, however, that the Capes have a very unque sound; I feel that they encorporate sounds that cover a huge spectrum, and they do it very well. They have a little electro-pop, they have acoustic brit-rock, up-beat danceable tunes, etc. The Capes mix their various elements and little idosyncracies extremely well in songs like Shinjuku Hi 5, which demonstrates a wonderful fusion of electro-pop, danceable bass and guitar lines, and of course catchy lyrics. I think that this album has something for everyone with its wide range of pop-sensibilities. The Capes are definitely getting air time on my radio show from now on.
What? No XTC comparison?
by Ms.MikiGeez, these guys are like straight outta Swindon. And there's a healthy dollup of Joe Jackson in there, too. I like it of course, a LOT. But I've got all this *amazing* XTC I'm still enjoying.
