iTunes Review
Chet Baker recorded these amorous songs for Pacific Jazz between 1952 and 1954, and the enthusiastic reception set the stage for 1956's Chet Baker Sings, which wowed the music world and alienated stalwart jazz enthusiasts. At the time of My Funny Valentine's release, most of Chet Baker's fans and critics were already aware of his trumpeting prowess in a West Coast cool jazz setting, but this was the first album that truly unveiled the man's silky inflections, which sound remarkably congruent to his trumpet playing. In its unwavering clarity, his androgynous voice avoids any vibrato with a straight and charming delivery that balances aloofness with emotion. He turned the opening title track — a cover of the Rodgers and Hart show tune — into a jazz standard and though the song is not his own, "My Funny Valentine" remains the one Baker is best known for. "Let's Get Lost" provides a perfect example of the uncanny chemistry between Baker's trumpet and Russ Freeman's piano playing. (The song's moniker was also appropriated to title Bruce Weber's outstanding 1988 Chet Baker documentary.) Baker's smooth take on "Like Someone In Love" is another standout track.

Chet Baker Sings!
by Thursday loverTo the reviewer named i heart music 09... That is a very weird comment for someone who purportedly "hearts" music... To clarify, of COURSE this is Chet Baker singing! Chet Baker was known as much for his sweet singing voice as for his sweet trumpet tones.
Smooth
by irenepireneChet Baker's vocals and playing are equally great. Very smooth and romantic. This album is great to put on for a romantic evening, or when you are just relaxing and want to listen to something mellow.
Baker's music is the epitome of cool, classy jazz (very different from the "lite" jazz of today).
by Watchdog09Whoever said this wasn't Chet's voice was not familiar with Chet Baker. He was as noteworthy for his atypical vocal style as he was for his trumpet playing. His early instrumental recordings with Gerry Mulligan (a tragic "partner" of Chet's in narcotics addiction) and other jazz greats predated the move to a solo career as a vocalist/trumpeter. Check out the breathy, almost child-like delivery and tell me there was anyone else singing like that during that period; had the incredibly punitive and juridical attitudes about drug addiction at the time not hounded him (I'm convinced) to an early death and to semi-exile from the US, he would have had more commercial success and more exposure. He is not a household name here, his story is not well known, and it's a pity.
Listen, read, and understand.
