iTunes Review

Corinne Bailey Rae’s voice is equal parts polish and grit, reminiscent of both Billie Holiday and Macy Gray, moving naturally from funky to sultry often within the same song. (And the overall production sound is reminiscent somehow of...coffee...) She could easily go over the top with pipes this silky, but stays on the tasteful side, reigning herself in and creating a mood instead of self-consciously showing off. This debut features mostly soulful ballads and down-tempo tunes that lend themselves to gently swaying in a comfortable chair rather than running for a dance floor -- the exception being the positively infectious “Put Your Records On,” a catchy, spirited song with a killer hook and sing-along chorus. Sharply produced and arranged just this side of slick, the album features understated strings and horns, smooth organ fills, and gentle guitar grooves, all of which add to the late-night vibe without ever getting in the way of the voice. This is a strong and satisfying start from a young woman with the potential to be the next big thing.

Compared to what..?

Into a world of Joss Stones and KT Tunstalls leaps another pretty great voice singing inoffensive songs that are entirely listenable, but as deeply unsatisfying as they come. Comparisons are being made to Billie Holliday, which are very wide of the mark - while Rae's voice is a good soul voice, it isn't imbued with any of the depth of Holliday, instead coming over like Janet Jackson mixed with Mariah Carey. Which, if you like that kind of thing, is fine. Rae co-wrote all of the songs on the album, and none bears any quality hallmark - they pass by as pretty average-sounding soul songs with no real defining Corinne Bailey Rae-ness. So Leeds has an answer to Joss Stone, but this bears as much resemblance to real soul or blues as The Commitments did to Detroit R&B.

You'd never believe its not summer!

This album is just beautiful......its feels like summer already when you play this album. Very refreashing and wonderfully mastered..... no wonder Corinne is the talk of the town. She WILL go far.

Sweet, Honey sweet

The headline track, is an effortless, joyful, spring summer groove. The magic is in 'like a star' - a breathtakingly beautiful track. both worth 6 stars. The rest is a worthwhile mix of well produced soul, and rythmn n' blues. The production qualities had me double taking when I realised this was a British soul artist. Is the band from the UK - we have lots of good players but not normally so good in this genre? Buy it, love it. A soundtrack for the best days of the summer of 6.
