iTunes Review

Nick Drake recorded only three solo albums in his brief but brilliant career, with the posthumous collection, Time of No Reply, following many years later. His tragic death in 1974 at age 26 perfectly mirrors the melancholy underpinning his greatest work and has turned the young English singer-songwriter into a cult legend. Drake’s catalog is a lean, concise collection of uniformly excellent material and performances. His unusual guitar tunings, his adept finger-picking, his otherworldly ghost of a voice combine to form one of the most fascinating sounds in modern music. Way to Blue collects highlights from each of his albums and serves as a worthy introduction to the man’s music. Since he never released a subpar recording, there is no potential for a misstep here. There are only personal preferences. “Northern Sky” from Drake’s second album, Bryter Layter, is a breathtaking work that comes to a grand crescendo with John Cale’s piano and celeste adding dramatic height. “Cello Song,” “River Man,” “Hazey Jane I” and “II,” “Pink Moon,” the tracks roll past in heavenly succession. The only downside is the missing gems (“Fly,” “Thoughts of Mary Jane”) that are readily available on the original studio albums.

Voice of a flute; Words like a dove

His songs ring something like a mellow summer breeze catching the wind. Other wooden music plays as too light to even awaken your senses; this doesnot disappoint. It brings a crisp melody that actually creates joy intended to lighten your spirit. That's what songs need to do. So take a long listen to "One of These Things, First"....preferable in a convertable, while roaring down the coastline and appreciate that talent, that God had given Nick Drake.

I heard Nick Drake on a community Radio station years ago, and of course the lazy DJ didn't bother to announce it. So, his voice had haunted me for years.
I found him on another show, and quickly called the radio announcer, and learned of Nick Drake. I listened to the iTunes essentials, and now am completing all the albums. River Man makes me bawl. I'm a professional musician (classical and avant-garde electronic), and I'm NOT religious and all I can say is: I've heard to voice of an angel pure and beautiful, his music speaks to my soul...its too bad he died so young...really too bad. Buy his stuff, listen to it, it will change you. Its rare to hear such purity in the pop-music world.

I wish I had found Nick's music sooner!

What a great artist. His music is like magic. It will take you to places you've never been before. Just close your eyes while listening songs like "Poor Boy, Northern Sky, etc."
I found Nick Drake's music because of "The Dream Academy"
Is just a sin that he had to pass on at such a young age!
For anyone who is looking for true quality music, this is what you've been looking for!

A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake produced several albums of chilling, somber beauty.
