hidden gem

Eric Clapton has called John Cale his "favorite person" (in the documentary To Tulsa and Back: On Tour with J.J. Cale, 2005). Cale is the songwriter behind Clapton's hits "Cocaine" and "After Midnight". A native of Oklahoma, Cale grew up in Tulsa in a musical culture of blues, western swing, and country. He played as a back-up musician at the historic Cain's Ballroom (best known as a favorite venue of the Wills brothers in the heyday of western swing) before heading out to California with Leon Russell and other Tulsa musicians. He is a driving force in the creation of the "Tulsa sound" which heavily influenced Clapton and the course of rock and roll in the 60's and 70's. Why isn't this man better known? He's been creating the music, not chasing fame.

J.J. Cale is one of the most influential blues artists of our time. His music is a genre of its own, underrated, and under-known. He has impacted so many other musicians including young blues players today. This is a great album to get to know Cale's abilities. A worthwhile purchase.
