iTunes Review

With his unique blend of folk, rock, blues, and soul, Ben Harper is difficult to categorize yet easy to appreciate. Armed with a deeply expressive voice and mostly uplifting lyrics focused on spirituality, Harper has the ability to be both passionate and playful, melding a singer-songwriter's aesthetic with a rich musical palette. Diamonds, his fifth studio album, broadens the musical scope even further: "With My Own Two Hands" has a distinct reggae flavor, while "Picture of Jesus" features the vocal contributions of South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Harper's genre-hopping sounds natural and unforced as he moves from country-blues stomps ("When It's Good") to funky workouts ("Bring the Funk") to heavy rockers ("So High So Low") to delicate ballads ("She's Only Happy in the Sun").

I bought this album when it first came out. At first listen it was okay, but not great. I listened to it a lot that year, and realized it's greatness. Since then it has found it's way back in to my current listening habbits every now and then. Every time I listen to it again, I forget how great it is. If you're looking for an eclectic mix of rock, blues, funk, soul, country, and even gospel, check this out.
