iTunes Review

With her pure, plain voice and songs as spare and lovely as a well-made Shaker chair, Iris DeMent dips from the same musical well as vintage Jimmie Rodgers or the Carter Family. Dating from 1992, her debut album Infamous Angel is a classic from first note, with DeMent's Arkansas-inflected twang a perfect companion for simple yet heartfelt lyrics about family, forgiveness, death, and human frailty. "Let the Mystery Be" is an improbably catchy paean to religious skepticism, while the bittersweet "Our Town" mourns a faded hometown and the life it framed. "Mama's Opry" offers a moving tribute to DeMent's music-loving girlhood, with a chorus that name-checks gospel classics as lovingly as a daughter leafing through a family album. Sentimental? A little, but then sentiment is the engine on which the greatest country songs run. DeMent is an American treasure, and the best of these songs will endure like the legends who inspired her.

What a gem. What a jewel.

Iris, where are you now? You need to put out another CD like this one, one of my all-time favorites. "Let the Mystery Be," "Hotter Than Mojave," "After You're Gone" -- songs just don't get any better.

Ridiculous

It's like I was hit in the face with a Iron Fry Pan and now I get it. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard by anyone. I regret being so late to the party.

Cuts into your heart

by DRE from Charlotte

The first time I heard Iris DeMent's 'Our Town,' I almost chuckled at the pure country sound. It was like stepping back to the radio of 1942. And then, in just a few seconds, I was captured. This song is savagely raw, despite the sweet, authentic sound of Iris DeMent's voice. I would rank 'Our Town' in the top 100 American recordings of all time. And this album, 'Infamous Angel,' deserves special attention. I love 'Let the Mystery Be,' 'Momma's Opry' and especially 'When Love Was Young.' It's not a perfect album - I think 'My Life' is DeMent's true masterpiece. I can't imagine the producers ever expected 'Infamous Angel' to be an all-time classic. But it is, based on the overwhelming power of 'Our Town.' Iris DeMent is truly unique. Her voice is so sweet, but there is a wicked razor's edge. It will cut deep into your heart. Just give it a few seconds.
