iTunes Review

Loved and hated, The Final Cut, Roger Waters last work as a member of Pink Floyd, is considered more his solo album than a collaborative effort with the group. Waters wrote all the songs, subtitling it “a requiem for the post war dream,” and collaborated more with producer Michael Kamen on orchestrations than with the remaining members of the band. (Keyboardist Richard Wright had resigned.) With guitarist David Gilmour shifted to the sidelines, the music rests on Waters’ minimal melodies and near-ambient (though carefully layered with sound effects) arrangements. Waters’ lyrics turn specifically political (“Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert,” “The Fletcher Memorial Home”), return to alienated rock star themes (“The Final Cut”) and are unquestionably negative in their prognosis for the human race (“Two Suns in the Sunset”). As a result, this is in many ways the most personal album Waters has ever cut and contains several overlooked gems (“The Post War Dream,” “Your Possible Pasts,” “The Gunner’s Dream,” “Paranoid Eyes”) that proclaim his singular voice.

It's not great, but it's ok.

I'm going to jump stright to the album. One of the big problems with it is that the songs all have a very mellow sound. (With the exception of Not Now John). This creates an overall lack of musical variety to the album. A guitar solo is thrown in every once in a while, an dit works well, but it can't save it from the album's almost bland sound. Not Now John stands out because of it's fast strong sound, which will remind you of Another Brick in the Wall, pt.2, but this isn't really a good thing. I doesn't seem to fit in with he rest of the album. It seemed as though the band was trying to add in a change in music type, but in the end, Not Now John ends up not working very well.

Although, lyrically this album is incredible, with many memorable lines like "Tell me true, tell me why, was Jesus crucified", "You can hide, hide, hide, Behind petrified eyes", and "Could anybody love him Or is it just a crazy dream?". Overall these are the lyrics that will stand out in your mind for years to come. Again though, Not Now John stircks out lyrical too, with much swearing and an overall lack of lyrical grace.

The songs are all relatively short, in comparrison with other Pink Floyd songs. Most of the songs are between 2:50 to 5:00, which is nothing compared to some of the longer Pink Floyd songs. (Dogs, Echoes, Shine On, etc.) This can be good or bad depending on your taste.

Despite these problems The Final Cut does have some good points such as The Final Cut (the song), and Your Possible Pasts. None of the songs on the album are really 'bad' most all seem equal with each other.(Except for Not Now John. I hate that song. >.<) But none of the songs seem to rise above and become great, but because of the lyrical genius of this album you'll remember each song individually.

Personally I would not recommend this album, unless you really enjoy the calm, mellow side of Pink Floyd. The lyrics are some of Pink Floyd's best, but even this can't save this album the it's overall lack of variety. Don't take me wrong is album is ok, but it just doesn't have that little extra that makes it great.

This album really isn't just a Brick in the Wall of Pink Floyd albums. (No pun intended.) This album represents the begining of the end for Pink Floyd. The decline of Pink Floyd began with this album. I believe Pink FLoyd began to lose their touch after The Wall, and The Final Cut was the next album to came. Don't get me wrong, Some of their later albums are great but just not as good as the days of Dark Side, Wish, Animals, and The Wall.

Undeniable brilliance.

Not sure why this album turned into a litmus test on who is a "true" Pink Floyd fan, but the quality of the song writing, production, and instrumental performances is as good as anything the band ever did... even if it sounds like NOTHING that came before it.

If you are on the fence about buying this album, here's a quick way to tell if you'll like it or not: Buy/Listen to just these four songs. If you like them, you will be blown away by the whole album:

The Hero's Return
The Gunner's Dream
The Final Cut
Two Suns in the Sunset

By the way/I understand
The feelings of the few/
Ashes and diamonds/
Foe and friend/
We are all equal in the end.

Overblown

This album, while good, is a sorry representation of Pink Floyd music. Honestly, if you were to introduce someone to Pink Floyd music, would you play a single tune off this album? No. This album is a mere afterthought to The Wall. This is a Roger Waters solo album, and, sadly for him, the best one he ever made. I think Roger Waters is a case in point against thinking you can be great all by yourself. Sure. We can say Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking is Great, that his other silly 80's albums are great- but in reality, they are dated. Floyd albums are timeless, because Roger Waters WASN'T the only one writing the music.
