Album Review
Only two singles came from Chingy's second album, 2004's Powerballin', neither of which matched the successes or strengths of Jackpot's "Right Thurr" and "One Call Away." Hoodstar makes it more apparent that the St. Louis MC's overnight popularity was like lightning in a bottle. Like a number of rap albums from the distant and recent past (Cassidy's Split Personality, for instance), Hoodstar is broken into sections with themes, but the themes in this case — the "hood" side and the "star" side — aren't all that distinct. The hood side has songs titled "Hands Up" and "Nike Aurr's & Crispy Tee's," while the star side has songs titled "A*s N da Aurr" and "Brand New Kicks," so we're not exactly dealing with a modern-day Death Certificate. Once again, Chingy does his best to balance his softer side (which he still does best, as in the Tyrese feature "Pullin' Me Back") with some menace (as in the Three 6 Mafia feature "Club Gettin' Crowded"). Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Mr. Collipark, Mannie Fresh, Kwamé, and longtime collaborators Trak Starz make for an impressive lineup of producers.

Chingy-Hoodstar
by btaznprideTwo albums released, a successful debut and a disappointing sophomore disc, Chingy is back with Hoodstar, a disc split into two sides of Star and Hood.
Intro (Rid'in Wit Me): Average intro, that wasn't anything that great, decent entrance to the album. 2.5/5
Hands Up: Poli Paul's guitar rocking lines and slow rolling banger, doesn't work that well as Chingy's flow is overpowered by the production. 2/5
Club Gettin Crowded: Three 6 Mafia handle guest and production duties with a hard hitting club banger. The hook isn't as tough as it should be and Juicy J and DJ Paul outshine and outmuscle Chingy on this threatening cut. Three 6 outshines Chingy, making for a decent cut. 3/5
Nike Aurr's & Crispy Tee's: Staying true to his St. Louis roots, the accented air's interpreted as "aurr's". A song about being fresh and fly, the hook was weak as Poli Paul's production is similar to "Hands Up" with a guitar rock line, repetitive synths and banging drums. Average. 2.5/5
Bounce That: Longtime collaborator Trackstarz assist Chingy with this club banger. With a nice drum pattern that is the main beat, Chingy's lyrics aren't that great and the hook isn't catchy enough to save the track. 2.5/5
Cadillac Door: One of the better cuts on the album, Poli Paul's wah wah guitar effects and Midwest City's lovely croon is nicely fitting. Chingy's flow is light and this is the most introspective track on the album, very nice. 3.5/5
Dem Jeans: Another JD production, banging piano keys with bass, Chingy's raps are cliched about the ladies, sipping on patron, and his amazement of "damn girl, how you get all of that in dem jeans, dem jeans". It's a banger that is most exciting with JD's little verse, its a typical club hit that was mediocre. 3.5/5
Pullin Me Back: Chingy has always been smooth and been successful with his R&B collaborations, this is yet another smooth love song to add to that catalog. Tyrese's smooth croon really makes this track with the great hook, JD has soft keyboards and high hats, Chingy's flow fits well. 4/5
U A Freak (Nasty Girl): Mr. Collipark's club banging "oooohhhhhhh weeeeeee!" and shrieking synths are joined by various drum patterns. The club banger just didn't cut it, the hook was wack and lyrically it is bad. Skipper. 1.5/5
Brand New Kicks: Longtime and well known southern producer Mannie Fresh drops an excellent piece of production filled with snares and synth lines. Decent hook, Chingy's flow is average on this and it ends up being one of the better club bangers. 3.5/5
A** N Da Aurr: Pumping bass, Chingy and his younger cousin Young Spiffy combine for a weak club track. Spiffy is weak, his appearance makes this track worse, a weak hook that has singing from Chingy that doesn't work and lyrically it fails. 1.5/5
Let Me Luv U: Timbaland's great drum pattern combos along with Keri Hilson's solid hook create the perfect setting for a Chingy hit. However Chingy doesn't really fit, and instead of being a single worthy cut, it is a disappointing unfulfilled potential. 3/5
Let's Ride: Kwame brings some ruckus worthy production, extremely busy production with hyper drums and bass. Fatman Scoop only adds to the craziness, as this ends the album on a horrible note. This track is so unorganized that you can't focus on Chingy and it is laughable at how bad it really is. 2/5
How We Roll: Bad Boy's Da Band's Chopper Young City spits on this with a mediocre verse on this Trackstarz banger. Average bonus. 2.5/5
Overall Chingy's third offering isn't much different from his past releases. He's just not as catchy, not as fun and not as enjoyable, as the same topics are recycled and redone, just with less punch. Despite the high profile producers, Three 6 Mafia, Mr. Collipark, Mannie Fresh, JD, and Timbaland, Chingy can't seem to muster up those club hits that made him popular with his debut. Chingy has never been a good lyricist with his St. Louis accented rhymes and style, it is growing tiresome as evident on this disc and previous. "Club Gettin Crowded" shows Chingy going hard-problem is he doesn't go hard and instead is oushined by the muscle of DJ Paul & Juicy J. "Bounce That", "A** N Da Aurr", "Let's Ride", "U A Freak (Nasty Girl)" and "Hands Up" are all tiresome topics, that lack creativity and are filler. "Nike Aurr's & Crispy Tee's" was decent at best, as "Let Me Luv U" doesn't fill potential. However, when Chingy is at his best, its the soulful and soft love track "Pullin Me Back" with a great appearance from Tyrese, which is Chingy's bread and butter. "Dem Jeans" is a decent club aimed success, as "Cadillac Doors" is the most introspective track, with a some fitting croon from Midwest City. "Brand New Kicks" is a solid Mannie Fresh production that was better than the other beats and it passes by beat and hook, lyrically it was decent. Hoodstar and Powerballin have both fallen short and Chingy's act is getting a little old.
