iTunes Review

Originally rejected by Atlantic Records, Peter Gabriel eventually released his self-titled third album on Mercury in 1980. Its cover photo depicting the artist’s melting face was appropriate — Gabriel was dissolving and reshaping his creative identity, with a transformed musical vision to match. The songs here confront and disturb, fleshed out by ominous arrangements melding synthesized rhythms with Third World motifs. Threats of political oppression and anonymous violence hang over the tracks; the singer seems to anticipate the terrors of the coming age. Few artists of the era (or now, for that matter) braved the dark terrain Gabriel stalked in tunes like “No Self Control,” ”Intruder” and “I Don’t Remember.” Remarkably, he scored a radio hit with “Games Without Frontiers,” a prophetic glimpse of wars-to-be. But for all the fear and gloom evidenced here, Gabriel’s message is ultimately a compassionate one. The album’s most unforgettable track is “Biko,” a deeply moving elegy for the murdered South African activist. Phil Collins, Robert Fripp, Kate Bush and other guests flit in and out at key moments. A generation after its release, Peter Gabriel’s third album stands as an enduring artistic triumph and a passionate statement of conscience.

Great Album, But Need Some Help with the Cover

A Melting Face? I Don't Think So. The 0nly Good Track is Games with Frontiers. iTunes needs some help with the cover.

no cymbals...

This is one of the great albums. One of the things that makes the sound so unique is the purposeful lack of cymbals in the percussion. Listen to it.

An underrated classic, relentless, haunting

by Jalan jalan

This is a great album from track 1 to the very end. The pioneering work with drum machines, the cutting edge lyrics, the enrelenting darkness. On top of all of that, the song Biko became an anthem of the anti-Apartheid movement and helped to ignite the outrage that ended Apartheid. An incredibly haunting and moving song that should be counted among the great protest songs of rock. I know people give out five stars to their favorite artists like candy but this album will truly amaze you. Thirty years from its release ,it sounds fresh, exciting, and dangerous. It is criminal that Itunes is not releasing the full version.

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. In his solo career, Gabriel was no less ambitious, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory,...
