iTunes Review

With Hello Love, the Vancouver, B.C., trio The Be Good Tanyas continue the inspired folk explorations that made their first two albums so irresistible. These women instinctively understand the power of subtlety, drawing surprising intensity from a lightly strummed guitar, a gently bowed fiddle, or a banjo plucked with delicate fingers. The singing is similarly low-key, yet forceful, as the Tanyas produce some seriously stunning harmonies — Frazey Ford mumbles mournfully and clips her words, Samantha Parton coos warmly, and Trish Klein travels the higher registers. And once again they mix some choice covers with their superb originals. There’s a sizzling take on Neil Young’s “For the Turnstiles,” and they merge their voices most tenderly on Mississippi John Hurt’s “Nobody Cares for Me.” They’ve also added some raw slide guitar in several places along with a judicious use of electric guitar that serve to make the acoustic instruments bite even harder. This is pure feel music with the ability to get deep under your skin. And regardless of how far they may drop the tempo, their music always manages to swing.

The Wait is Over!

After a long Be Good Tanyas absence (some band members went to have other musical experiences--Po'Girl, for one) I was so excited to see a new album.
Hello Love will not disappoint...it's beautiful, melodic, other worldly and sometimes country (but in a good way). If you are looking for an introspective album that resonates with memories you may have already experienced or are looking for a place in your musical heart that reminds you of past and present peaceful loves, then this is it. Song for R. and Hello Love are my favorites if I had to choose.Frazey Ford's voice is one that always stands out...unique and poignant. Gorgeous!

Great follow up!

Don't let this be your first Be Good Tanyas album, but don't overlook it either. Vocals and harmonies are as beautiful as ever but the general feel is a little more mellow that their other work. Get some of their earlier stuff first but be sure to add this to your collection at some point. The remake of "When Doves Cry" is totally fresh and enjoyable.

Perfect!

Absolutely. This is what I was waiting for! I can't help but sway when I listen to this album. It's the perfect blend of the Tanya's previous work, with just the right amount of sunshine and rain. Although I do wish iTunes had the imported version, because the one that came out in Canada has "Back Back Train" and "Birds" on it.....you can get "Back Back Train" on the "Scattered Leaves" EP though. Anyways, an excellent album. It makes me happy :)

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Cana

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The Be Good Tanyas play an old-timey blend of folk, country, and blues bolstered by sweet harmonies and traditional fingerpicking. The Vancouver trio has garnered comparisons to like-minded predecessors such as Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent. The group came together when Samantha Parton, who had spent her post-high school years traveling with her guitar (drawing strong musical influence from visits to the Southern U.S.), returned to Vancouver. She and Jolie Holland initially formed the group, then...
