Album Review
Verve's Chet for Lovers compiles many of the iconic jazz trumpeter's most romantic sides recorded for such labels as Pacific Jazz and EmArcy during the '50s. While there are many more comprehensive collections detailing the career of the gifted yet troubled Baker, Verve does a nice job of focusing in on some lesser known cuts that spotlight the trumpeter's gifts for melody and lyricism. Included are such afterglow-ready tunes as "Easy Living," "Touch of Your Lips," and "Everything Happens to Me." This is a warm listen that perfectly sets its intended mood.

Terrific record, but don't buy it from iTunes
by Bill GeeThis is a fantastic record. But the album version on iTunes lops off 1:58 from "Autumn in New York", abruptly cutting off the piano solo toward the end of the song. When you contact iTunes to tell them that the song is a partial version, they tell you that it is your problem and "thanks for being an iTunes customer". Save yourself the hassle and buy the disc from Amazon or your local mom & pop distributor. Otherwise, you'll miss a critical element to an otherwise wonderful compilation. Anyway did Chet Baker record anything that isn't for lovers?
Contemporary after the test of time, Compelling collection of love tunes
by Ricardo CarreónChet Baker is one of the American legends of American Jazz. The trumpetist and vocalist was outstanding at conveying a wide range of feelings through his voice and melancholic “cool jazz” trumpet. But he was especially capable to bring out the emotions of romantic jazz ballads: his voice and his trumpet could easily transmit the melancholic tone of lost love, while at the same time producing the soft, sweet joy of new love being born.
“Chet for Lovers” is a very complete collection of Jazz standards recorded between 1955 and 1965. The musical instrumentation sounds remarkably contemporary, as if it was recorded today by one of the contemporary jazz proponents. This is a testimony to Chet Baker’s timelessly elegant trumpet playing and distinctive vocals. Actually, if you compare and contrast this collection to some of the new “cool jazz” recordings of ballads, you’d probably be amazed at how well the 40-50 year old tunes stack against the contemporary recordings.
Recommended tracks to try: “There is no Greater Love”, “Those Foolish Things (Remind me of you)” and “Everything Depends on You”. Chat does the vocals on the first and third tacks, while he does the trumpet on the second one. Enjoy.
