GO SHOWGIRLS!
by broadwaysomedayThis past summer, I was in a production of Oklahoma! at my theatre camp, and it was the best experience of my life. My favorite songs would have to be "Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin'," "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Oklahoma," and the Ballet, which unfortunately is not featured on this particular album. In the dream ballet, I was a Showgirl..It was so much fun. This album is a must-have for anyone who is obsessed with theatre and broadway like I am!!
P.S. If any of my fellow showgirls, or dream jud is reading this, I love you guys!! xoxox
Not just a museum piece
by ncgrahamIf you are at all a fan of musicals, you probably know about this recording, which was the first complete one made of a Broadway show. But unfortunately it is often treated as a historical document only, whereas it is quite effecting as a stand-alone performance of this famous R&H show. The major performances here definitely come from Alfred Drake and Celeste Holm. He has by far the best voice of all the cast members, though as John Raitt has stated, his dramatic strengths eclipse even his vocalism. "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" is simply a joy, and it is fascinating to hear him sing "Lonely Room," originally intended for the character of Jud (perhaps Howard da Silva was indisposed?); by employing a different vocal shading from the one he used as Curly, he sounds completely different person! My brother once walked in on me watching a clip of Celeste Holm, and proclaimed her a terrible singer. It's probably true—she goes off key several times—but she's just so spunky and charming, one scarcely scares. Indeed, there is a wonderful old world charm to all the perfomances. The only person I don't partricularly like is Joan Roberts, though even she produces a gloriously birdlike high note at the end of the finale. The sound quality is poor, but no more than one might expect given the time, and it effects the orchestra more than anything else. Highly recommended, though you may also want to look into the movie soundtrack, which features an impressive set of leads in Gordon MacCrae and Shirley Jones.
