Album Review

Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn's thirty-plus-year career has found him musically traversing through simple acoustic pop, synth-y '80s rock, progressive worldbeat, and straightforward rock. Through it all he has maintained a brightly clever way with words and bracingly fresh view on the world that surrounds him, and all of this is brilliantly illustrated on Rounder Records' anthology Anything Anytime Anywhere (Singles 1979-2002). His clean, rhythmic "hit" "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" acts as a bridge between the darkly romantic "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" and the heavy political vibe of "Call it Democracy," all of which carry Cockburn's trademark droll delivery and sharp pen. As an added attraction, many "greatest hits" collections tack on a few new tracks, and often these subpar songs detract from the overall album. Fortunately, on this collection, the two new songs "My Beat" and particularly the title track "Anything Anytime Anywhere" rank among the best he's written, proving that he hasn't lost any of his biting edge.

Best Of Bruce Cockburn - Circa 2001...

The problem with compilation / Best of / Greatest Hits albums is that artists with long careers obviously have too many songs to fill just one disk.

I actually liked the 'Resume' compilation album from the early 1980's better, because it included the song "Laughter".

This compilation is spread out over Bruce's nearly 4 decade career. It is a great place to start if you are new to Bruce, because you will find that there are many more treasures to discover over time.

Bruce is an understood genius

Here's the fun: I love his music, and have many of his albums. I enjoy his razor sharp writing, which is perfectly complemented by his musical talents. I even appreciate some of his political stuff, but I have to admit that the politics has soured Cockburn over the years, and he's become a bit of a whiner, which is sad. No one is great forever, and his diminished present doesn't refute his brilliant past.

Great Coverage of Songs

If you like Bruce Cockburn, you'll like this album. From the "radio" hits to his more sublime songs that lay deeper in his work, this has a good mix of both. I certainly was not disappointed.
