iTunes Review

As the square peg of country music, Lyle Lovett never really fit into Nashville's round hole. Thank goodness. His desire to shrug loose that mantle brought us the wondrously eclectic Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. Opening with an energetic rendition of jazz legend Clifford Brown's "The Blues Walk," the album contains moments of gospel-tinged R&B ("Good Intentions"), songbook style pop ("I Know You Know"), and classic country ("Which Way Does That Old Pony Run"). As always, Lovett's warm nuanced voice and sharp songwriting provide the constant. And his wry humor (particularly on "Here I Am") is delivered with such perfect timing the man could be a stand-up comedian. Lovett never met a woman he didn't regret liking later, and the constant theme of "love gone wrong" peppers the album, even in his so-straightforward-it-must-be-ironic cover of "Stand By Your Man." Everything works here, the song choices, the arrangements, and Lovett's band, which meshes seamlessly.

THE just Divorced Album

by BenFranklin

If you were recently divorced, you have to listen to this album. The entire album is about breaking up in one form or another. Thanks to Julia for triggering this emotional outpouring of great tunes.
Great mix of three styles: large band blues (i.e. Here I Am); swing style (Good Intentions) and some great vocals (Nobody Knows Me). Then there are a few more traditional country tracks that I skip over (Stand By Your Man).

Lyle is the Louis Armstrong of country music

by Ken Scar

That's right. Louis Armstrong was at once whimsical, sentimental and a little absurd in his songwriting without ever compromising the quality of his music. That's Lyle, man. This guy is just so great. Who else could record such an eccentric album that appeals to fans of country, blues, jazz and alternative music? Take the song "Here I Am", which is utterly absurd in its structure, yet works beautifully and is, in fact, one of the most entertaining songs Lyle's ever done. Those of you who love country music will want to buy the lovely "Which Way does that Old Pony Run", and anyone that's been married or in a serious relationship (or wishes they were) will want to listen to the gorgeous "Nobody Knows Me" and "If You Were To Wake Up". In short, this album is a classic and I can't believe I'm only the second person to write a review of it on iTunes. My hope is that one day in the future my grandkids will get on iTunes and see I wrote the second out of 300,000 reviews of this album and think, "Grandpa was pretty cool!" (Hi, Kids!)

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van...
