iTunes Review

The 2005 suicide of Crowded House drummer Paul Hester virtually guaranteed that the first new Crowded House studio album in more than a decade would feel the aftershocks, and that songwriter Neil Finn’s senses would be overwhelmed with somber tones and forlorn musings where once a light step and pop twinkle led the way. “She Called Up” and the Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr co-write “Even a Child” maintain an upbeat glow with Finn’s trademark carnivalesque arrangements — aided by producers Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite and not the band’s usual studio conspirator Mitchell Froom — but these moments are the exception. Much of the material sports a cautious hesitancy, a haunting sense that things aren’t quite what they seem and that a day of reckoning waits sooner than later. “Nobody Wants To,” “Pour Le Monde,” “Say That Again,” and especially “Silent House,” a co-write with the Dixie Chicks, and “You Are the One to Make Me Cry” brood more like a moody singer-songwriter than an effervescent popsterman, making this group collaboration feel more like a Neil Finn solo album than his actual solo albums: the personal pain is inescapable even if beautifully wrought.

Did you see them on PBS HD?

Recently they were on a PBS-HD program; I believe it was "Austin City Limits." To see them perform "Silent House" live was really moving, knowing what they've gone through with the loss of Paul Hester.

Brilliant band, as always!

Neil Finn Can Do No Wrong

by new music junkie

I had to spend some time with this album in order to fall in love. I am a HUGE Neil Finn & Split Enz fan, never truly catching on to the Crowded House frenzy...however... I always appreciated them. So, two months into owning this album, I can now give it a very favorable review. It is a departure from Neil's solo work, but not a far cry. The standout tracks for me are People Are Like Suns, Pour Le Monde, Say That Again and English Trees, however, the most "Crowded House-like" songs (and equally as good) are Nobody Wants To, Don't Stop Now and She Called Up. This is an album that grows on you, not an easy fix to an immediate need... more like a warm blanket that casually envelops you.

Wonderful "Return"

Neil Finn has never left us- his solo and collaborative work has been brilliant over the years. I find this album to be a wonderful continuation of Neil's poignant and rich songwriting skills- possibly some of his very best. I cannot stop listening to it. Mastery.
