iTunes Review

Only an artist of John Lennon’s stature and caliber could pull off such an intensely personal and probing collection of songs and still manage to make its concerns collective and universal. On Lennon’s first proper solo album the arrangements are stripped to their essentials: band tracks center around either Lennon’s electric guitar or piano with only Klaus Voorman’s bass and Ringo Starr’s drums for backing. Lennon’s only concession to performance remains his insistence on double-tracking many of his vocals. All else is raw. From the funeral bell that opens “Mother” (which climaxes with Lennon’s primal scream), the scathing acoustic ballad “Working Class Hero,” the womb-like romantic paean of “Love,” the bitter indictments of “I Found Out” and “Well Well Well,” to the finality of Lennon’s purpose statement “God,” where he puts the final nail in the Beatles’ coffin, Plastic Ono Band is one of the most chilling, riveting and personal albums ever made.

the album is so raw and poetic, john says it as he sees it, and still puts a catchy rythm to it

The Best Beatles Solo Album? Yes

by Katy~

This is on the shortlist of best albums ever. Not one song on here is "filler" or a throwaway. The whole thing starts out with the somber church bells on "Mother" (the chorus climaxing into frantic screams) and ends with the tinny faraway minute long "My Mummy's Dead." (I'm not reviewing the bonus tracks since I am going off my vinyl album.)
"Hold On" is the one piece of pure sunshine on the album, with John imitating the Cookie Monster halfway through. "I Found Out" is a raging piece somewhat similar to "Well Well Well". "Working Class Hero", which may be my favorite song on the album, is musically quiet but perhaps the angriest song John ever did. In "Isolation" John expresses his fears and "Remember" recalls Guy Fawkes. "Love" is a quiet, self-explanatory piece. On "Look At Me" a pretty melody disguises the sad and confused message. "God" is breathtaking.

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting — and frustrating — solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without...
