iTunes Review

Joni Mitchell’s 2007 return to the music industry after nearly a decade’s sabbatical finds her pretty much where she left off. Her jazz-tinged, idiosyncratic pop, piano meets saxophone and melodic electric bass, remains unpredictable in its compositional structure and her lyrics are mostly pointedly opinionated from the anti-war “Strong and Wrong” to the environmental concerns of “This Place” and the personal empowerment of “If.” She begins with the instrumental “One Week Last Summer,” as if to slowly immerse herself and to playfully tease her audience with a little anticipatory tension. However, she breaks her silence within the first thirty seconds of “This Place,” her voice in fine form, considering its darkening over the years, contemplating the aesthetic ugliness she finds around her. “If I Had a Heart” confronts the difficulties of reconciling one’s personal dreams and desires with the realities of human nature and a world of money. The 2007 update of “Big Yellow Taxi” replaces Mitchell’s initial warning with the resigned sound of factual truth. “Shine” wishes for genuine love and compassion to replace the platitudes and hate behind so many political messages. But more than her literal words, Mitchell offers beauty in the form of weightless rhythms and pastoral instrumental passages that perform like mist over a field.

The sparkle is not there

Joni has been a heavy smoker most of her life. The clarity of her voice and words are not to be found in these recordings. It's a disappointment for this long-time fan.

Jumpstarts The Soul

I saw part of Joni's interview about the making of this CD, and it resonated bittersweet and epic with me, especially with what is now happening on this earth in regards to war, greed, selfishness, and hate. History repeats itself over and over until we will no longer exist. Her voice reflects this sadness and the reality that if we don't pull ourselves away from self-absorption, and start to love and help others as a way of BE-ing, we will die off as a species.

Okay, and when I step back from how deep all of this is, I have to say that I love the songs, her matured voice, and the way these songs have been orchestrated. Something wonderful comes with maturity and wisdom. Joni was way ahead of her time back in the 1960's and she just keeps leaping far ahead of the rest of us in forecasting the future through her lyrics and musical talent. She is such a gifted yet forgotten artist. I just don't understand why she isn't revered by more by people. When I listen to her music, I think: "How did she create such a masterpiece?" She does it over and over again. You can listen to her music and enjoy the jazziness of it, or listen deep to what she is saying and heed the message.

Dissapontment

This is just so sad. It's just simply not that good. The lyrics are a far cry from any other album of hers. Has she run out of poetry? The music is just ok...it does not compare to other albums like Blue or Ladies of the Canyon. We have all waited for this one and I think it was in vain.

When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century.
