Little voices meet lush orchestra
by ncgrahamI listened to this album under the misapprehension that somehow it would be better than the movie from which it was derived. Nothing has changed. Brigadoon is still a classic example of what can happen when Hollywood decides to have its own way with a strong Broadway score, and to put it mildly, it’s not pretty. For one, there are terrible cuts—Meg Brockie’s songs are nowhere to be seen on this album, and the two wonderful duets “The Heather on the Hill” and “Almost Like Being in Love” are self-servingly turned into Gene Kelly solos. The latter makes even less sense when one considers that Kelly was basically miscast in this role. Leaving aside his dancing (fabulous) and acting (excruciating), he just doesn’t have the vocal range or size to convince as Tommy Albright. The singing voices of Fiona and Charlie are fine, but not all that extraordinary compared to other recordings. Only buy this if you’re mindlessly addicted to the movie, or don’t mind sacrificing vocals in favor of the instrumentals, which are admittedly brilliant.
