Simply charming

I have not seen the film Kiss Me, Kate in years, but this summer when I was sitting on my lifeguard stand one long, dreary Texas afternoon, it somehow came to my mind and I immediately vowed to watch it again. As of this writing, I still have not (unfortunately, neither of the libraries I frequent carry it), but what a delight the soundtrack is! Not only is every song excellent, but they all seem perfectly suited to the singers’ style. Howard Keel, our leading man, has with three solo pieces, each of which he sings beautifully and expressively. “Were Thine That Special Face” is mellifluous but masculine, “I Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua” is appropriately bombastic, and “Where is the Life that Late I Led?” is both wry and anguished. Frequent costar Kathryn Grayson’s voice sounds admittedly thin in “So in Love,” but only slightly so, and she fully makes up for it with her acidic but still hilarious version of “I Hate Men,” not to mention the fabulous coloratura ornaments she interpolates into the duet “Wunderbar”—now that’s operetta!
Although taking “Too Darn Hot” away from the African-American stagehand may rid the story of a nice piece of social commentary (I’m not sure, never having seen the stage play live), it only makes sense to give it to a more prominent character, and Ann Miller simply rips it to pieces. I love her run on the title at about halfway through the song. Also excellent are her wonderfully bluesy rendition of “Why Can’t You Behave?” and the almost erratic “Always True to You in My Fashion.”
All the other pieces are commendable, especially the pun-laden “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” and the whole is under the assured baton of André Previn. In short, this is a remarkable performance.

Great Music, Great Movie!

I'm sure the broadway soundtrack is fantastic too, but how could you go wrong with such wonderful stars like Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson!? If you're like me and love classic movie musicals, buy this soundtrack! Not only is it totally awesome, but its cheap! Could you get a better deal?
