iTunes Review

The Hoboken, New Jersey trio's tenth album unfolds slowly, rewarding patience and close listening with subtle textures, gentle harmonies, and a becalming mood. This is not the sound of a band playing to its familiar strengths; only the swirling "You Can Have It All" and Georgia Hubley's "Madeline" showcase Yo La Tengo's knack for catchy pop, and Ira Kaplan reins in his passion for skronk guitar everywhere except on "Cherry Chapstick." Mostly the songs glide on rich vocal harmonies, hum atop skittering percussion, or shimmer with trebly waves of synths. While much has been made of the album's lyrical content (it supposedly contained Ira and Georgia's most personal writing to date), the vocals function more often to color and shade the mood than to communicate literal meaning. (There are a few exceptions, most notably Kaplan's intimate talk-sing turn on "The Crying of Lot G.") Though listeners just discovering Yo La Tengo are advised to start elsewhere-Painful is a particularly sure bet-And Then Nothing is an accomplished work from a talented, veteran band not content to sit still.

This was my very first YLT album, and my very first song was Our Way to Fall. I fell in love immediately. I own nearly thousands of albums of all sorts of genres, and I can honestly say that this is in my top three favorite albums of all time. There is so much creativity and heart put into "And Then Nothing". It's hard for me to pick out my favorite tracks, because everytime I listen, I find something new.

I could write an essay on this album, and how it changed my life. Try going somewhere other than your house to listen to this... Maybe your backyard or in your car for a drive. Just make sure the lights are dimmer than usual to prepare yourself for this mellow masterpiece.

Thank Goodness for iTunes

Remember those days when you'd hear one song by a band, like it. Go to the record store, buy the album, bring it home. Fast-forward to the song you liked, listen to it. Listen to the other songs on the album and 9 times out of 10 wonder why you had to buy the whole album because the only good song was the one you bought.

Well, all I can say is Thank goodness for iTunes. I bought the single song 'Cherry Chapstick' for a buck after listening to the sample. Sounded pretty good and I was in a mood that facilitated the purchase. I got it home and listened to it. The sample is good the rest of the song -- annoying. It's like they took what could've been a great song and asked themselves "If we really wanted to destroy this sound what could we do?" Someone chimmed in "We could let your 5 year-old little sister start wailing on your electric guitar for the guitar solo portion of the song". Apparently, everyone in the band and the producers thought that was a good idea.

This is a wonderful album. while it's different from some of YLT's "noisier" albums, it's my lyrical and perhaps musical favorite. The choices that they made were deliberate- it's sometimes small sounding but with a big heart. It feels to me like Ira and Georgia's love letters to each other.
Wonderful in general. "Lot G" and "Tony Orlando's" are two of my favorite. "Our Way to Fall" makes me want to fall in love.

Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition — three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim — the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe...
