iTunes Review

Throughout the 1980s with each successive studio album, NYC’s Sonic Youth came closer to flirting with mainstream rock n’ roll. Their abundant feedback, discordant drones, alternate guitar tunings and cryptic lyrics were being applied to more “conventional” song structures as the band’s popularity took an unexpected rise. Daydream Nation appeared at the end of the ‘80s as CDs were quickly becoming the popular medium. Nation took advantage of the 70-minute length, indulging in extended instrumental hi-jinks and an abundance of song ideas. Every aspect of the group’s approach is represented from the compact rock thrust of “Silver Rocket” (that also features a mid-song breakdown and a dramatic return to form) to the epic styling of the album’s closing “Trilogy” where the guitars pile up with progressive rock ambition. This is still not easily accessible music. The hooks are often buried in the murk, and the wall of sound takes several plays to penetrate. While “Hey Joni,” “Total Trash” and “Teenage Riot” feature catchphrases to orient oneself, the instrumental onslaughts are meant to send the listener into suspended time and space where gravity and traditional musical expectations are transcended. They succeed more often than not.

This is one of the most amazing things my ears have ever had the pleasure of listening to. If you choose to buy anything from this album, just make sure you leave with Teenage Riot and Candle.

This may sound cliche but...

Being a SY fan for a while now and having all their albums which i've listened to extensively, I still find this to be their greatest achievement. I think NYC ghosts and flowers andl also washing machine are artistically brilliant on the same level, however their is something about this album that brings more to the table than just 14 songs. This album defies convention as their others before, but at the same time is entertaining on all levels. the nature of SY can almost be embodied entirely by this one album. not to mention it's influence on punk and experimental music will probably never die out. this albums like wine that gets better with age. cheers to SY and i'm sick of reading reviews by morons who talk trash on this band like anything they did in their lives is better.

Awesome Stufff

Sonic Youth were one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the '80s. Where contemporaries R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü were fairly conventional in terms of song structure and melody, Sonic Youth began their career by abandoning any pretense of traditional rock & roll conventions....
