iTunes Review

Want One, Rufus Wainwright’s third album, finds Wainwright and veteran producer Marius deVries working to shore up the sonic supports that make his art so compelling. Stunningly opulent, Want One embroiders his work with pizzicato strings, woozy cabaret brass, chiming vibes and a thousand other theatrical, but masterfully deployed sonic adornments. If Want One’s production is monolithically ornate, Wainwright’s songwriting remains as varied as ever, folding power-pop, show tunes, waltzes, and wild-eyed Bossa tempos into its ample embrace. The six and a half minute long “Go Or Go Ahead” plays like a Big Star showstopper as rendered by Radiohead, while “Beautiful Child” combines multi-layered harmonies worthy of Marc Bolan with the expansiveness of a Brian Wilson production. Want One is an impressive and thoroughly entertaining demonstration of Wainwright’s prodigious talents as a singer, songwriter, and arranger.

This is the album that introduced me to Rufus and is still my favorite. Every song touches me in some way. Some definite must listens are "I Don't Know What It Is," "Dinner At Eight," and "11:11" which makes a few references to September 11th. Want One is a great album from beginning to end, definitely worth the money.

This is my favorite album by Rufus, and this was my favorite album for years. I also want to thank my aunt for showing me his other CD, Want 2. I also saw him live twice and bought his new album Release the Stars. I remember when I couldn’t sleep, and I played with crystals while I listened to this CD.
1: 5/5 A very nice intro. His hum makes me smile  and the horns are fun to hear.
2: 6/5 A sadder song, but beautiful. This song has amazing piano, and the train pulling in at the end is fun to listen to.
3: 4/5 This song is sadder still. The piano is rhythmless, but that’s how I like it. But it’s kinda boring.
4: 5/5 We return to a happy song, with awesome banjo. The lyrics are quirky. But the melody is very catchy, and you’ll love it.
5: 4/5 This is a quiet tune, but it is beautiful. It reminds me of Vicious World, but this song sounds different and similar!
6: 6/5 This song is quiet at the beginning, and explosive at the end. It’s majestic. It’s a feast of lights exploding for your ears.
7: 3/5 Meh. This is a more ridiculous tune. It’s boring and kinda drawn out.
8: 5/5 This is a fun, twangy piano blues. It’s also very catchy.
9: 4/5 Beautiful song. I love the bells and the quiet but sad melody. It’s majestic.
10: 3/5 I just can’t get into this one.
11: 4/5 I prefer the first half, but this is still an excellent song. It’s a little like 14th St.
12: 4/5 Beautiful and quiet. Fits in with the two tracks surrounding it.
13: 5/5 This is another happy song. Lovely guitar.
14: 4/5 This could be the only song here that makes me cry. So sad, and the last song here.
I love this album. You will love it!
